You can avoid making unnecessary server side calls by using a custom validator and setting the control properties through javascript.

Browse All TopicsI am using a RequiredFieldValidator validation control in VWD 2008. The validator works fine firing when no data is typed into the textboxes and dropdownlists. I would like the textbox or dropdownlists border to change colour to red if the validator returns a false values as well as showing the text property of the validator. I have looked online for help but havent found anything. Im using VB.Net.
Thanks in advance.

i beleive, that functionality is not built into the ASP.NET validators. You can do it if you only use server side validation. That way, you can post back to do validation. Then in your post back event handler, do this:
/KB/valida tion/ highl ight_valid ators.aspx
Label1.ForeColor = Color.Black
If Not Page.IsValid Then
If Not Validator1.IsValid Then
Label1.ForeColor = Color.Red
End If
End If
