that calls the function:
Protected Sub lg_Authenticate(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.
as you can see.
However this is being hit twice, why is this?
As you can see I have some audit code in there which writes to a text file but two line sare being entered becase the function is being hit twice.
why is this the case?

You have wired the event twice. Remove the OnAuthenticate server event from your HTML or remove the handle from the code. That should solve it.
