When ASP.NET compiles pages, it includes references for every DLL that is referenced.

You could try clearing out the VSWebCache and the Temporary ASP.NET Files for referenced, but if you don't solve the root problem, it will just come back to haunt you.

How do I clear these out? Do I just delete everything through windows explorer or is there some utility?

Nope, no utility, just delete with Windows Explorer.

Clearing out Temporary internet files can be little tricky when IIS is running (and particularly when ASPNET process is showing up in the Task Manager).

1) iisreset /stop
2) Navigate to Temporary Internet Files within .NET Framework folder in Windows.
3) Clear off the folder of its contents.
4) iisreset /start

This should solve your problem.

ok I've cleared out all the temporary files, but when I recompile the turn up again and give the same error.

Note it is the same file in both directories - do you know what causes this?

by: TheLearnedOnePosted on 2008-04-04 at 09:23:31ID: 21283285

Like I said, when a page is compiled, all DLLs are referenced on the page, so if you have the same method name in two classes, then it will see both of them.
