Question

Mimicking user actions within a program

Asked by: imateyelectronics

I am currently creating a program that takes data from our clients database system, SAP, and inputing it into our own database system, Navision.  We are currently doing this manually which is very tedious and error prone.  While I have access to download information from SAP, I don't have direct database access, nor do I have unrestricted access to our Navision database.  My idea is to make a program that mimics the actions a users would take in inputting this data by hand.  What I mean is that the program would push the F12 key or close etc.  Is this even possible?  Is there some type of open source or source code that does this?  Am I even using the correct terminology?  I've read about screen scrapers, but this seem to only work on web based applications.  Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

You can probably use some VBScript to do it.

Why don't you load the data as default into the form? From there, you can call a javascript function to submit the form. You should get it this way.

Otherwise, mimicing user input (if you mean typing keys on the keyboard) could be achieve through SendKeys. But, I never used this myself.

Your real problem is that the validation done when the user enters by hand needs to be done also when you do the import as well.

You cannot call the validation during database inserts.
So you can try to make a screen macro program that will enter the data as the user would do, but I belive you will have great difficulties doing this. You would have to handle every pop-up window and when the window changes you would need to redo you programming.

My best solution for you is to let a Navision programmer do the import. You can provide the data for him as a file or maybe a new import table in the Navision database. He will be able to make a solution that works everytime and that also call the validation code of Navision. It should not take him long to do such an import if you know precisely where to put the data in question.

You are correct in this.  We decided to use a dataport to import our information into a Navision table and are comarping the two systems using C/FRONT and ASP.NET
