How to format data in a in the RowDataBound event of a GridView ?

I have a gridview bound to a dataset with a column named "description" that contains HTML data.
I need to Server.HTMLdecode the cell as it is loaded into the GridView and do other pre-formatting of other templated controls. I know it can be done in the RowDataBound event, but I can't seem to format the cell without errors.
How do I reference a templated item so that I can change the format as it is being loaded?

Here's the item template:

<ItemTemplate>
<asp:Panel ID="pnlDescr" runat="server" Height="50px" ScrollBars="Auto" Width="250px">
<asp:Label ID="Label1" runat="server" Text='<%# Bind("Description") %>'></asp:Label>
</asp:Panel>
</ItemTemplate>

Just for kicks, I tried the code below (knew it wouldn't work, but needed to show something)
How do I reference the inner most control?
