The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Global.asax fires locally and on beta server, but not in production

Tags: C#, FF 2.0
Greetings. This is urgent.

I have a Asp.net 2.0 web application. To deploy it to beta I am publishing the contents to to a local directory then move the files over to the virtual directory on beta. To deploy to production I publish to a local directory, then ftp the site to the production server.

Local machine: winxp
Beta and Production: win2003

My issue is that on production none of the events in the global.asax.cs file seem to fire. Application_BeginRequest, Application_Error, and Session_Start are the ones that I need to fire specifically.

Right now there is no apparent difference between the Beta and production code.

My global.asax has this:
<%@ Application Codebehind="Global.asax.cs" Inherits="Global" Language="C#" %>

The global.asax.cs has really standard stuff like:
        protected void Session_Start(object sender, EventArgs e)
        {
            if (Session["SessionInfo"] == null)
            {
                SessionInfo mySession = new SessionInfo();
                Session["SessionInfo"] = mySession;
            }
        }

I've read tons of information about people having similar issues, but I can't seem to get any of those events to fire on the production server. Is there a mystical magical IIS setting I'm missing?
Thanks in advance.

I just specified everything in my global.asax itself..

<%@ language="C#" Debug="true"%>
<%@ Import Namespace="System" %>
<%@ Import Namespace="System.Web.Security" %>
<%@ Import Namespace="System.Security.Principal" %>
<%@ Import Namespace="System.IO" %>
<%@ Import Namespace="System.Reflection" %>
<%@ Import Namespace="System.Resources" %>
<script language="C#" runat="server">
void Application_Start(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
Application.Add("ConnectionString","Server=xxxxxxxxxx;Trusted_Connection=no;database=xxxxxxx;uid=xxxx;pwd=xxxxxxxxx");
      Application.Add("CommunicateReferalSubject","Communicate Referal");
      Application.Add("snet_dir","945");
}

//THIS FUNCTION HANDLES THE FORM AUTHENTICATION
void Application_AuthenticateRequest(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
      // Extract the forms authentication cookie
      string cookieName = FormsAuthentication.FormsCookieName;
      HttpCookie authCookie = Context.Request.Cookies[cookieName];

      if(null == authCookie)
      {
            // There is no authentication cookie.
            return;
      }

      FormsAuthenticationTicket authTicket = null;
      try
      {
            authTicket = FormsAuthentication.Decrypt(authCookie.Value);
      }
      catch(Exception ex)
      {
            // Log exception details (omitted for simplicity)
            return;
      }

      if (null == authTicket)
      {
            // Cookie failed to decrypt.
            return;
      }
}

</script>

I tried this, no luck I'm afraid.

Scripting the global.asax file works properly on my local and on beta, but still not on production.

Sigh.

ok, have a look in your IIS MMC and goto the relative website and check its 'Home Directory' tab, ifyou have no application name, create one and assign execute permissions to Script Only. Also, check the checkbox marked 'Script source access' and 'read'
Also, once thats done, press the configuration button and verify that asax files are associated with
c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_isapi.dll
or whatever dotnet version your running.
for these verbs: GET,HEAD,POST,DEBUG
and both checkboxes are checked below.

Hope that helps.

Hi debuggerau-
I have done all that you recommended for IIS, but with no luck.

As an updated, I have gone from a code-behind for the global asax to a scripted global asax... once again this works on beta but does not work on production.

I have also tried creating a new app pool that runs under an administrator's account. Unfortunately, this gave me a 'service unavailable' error for some reason.

Sigh. Sorry guys, I've been googling this issue for hours and hours and have yet to find anything that works.

sheesh, sounds like it may have something to do with the security policy of dotnet.
Control Panel, Admin tools, Dot net 2.0 Config and reset the permissions...
I'll have a look around tonight..

Note to self. Don't ever use the 'Web Deployment Project'. It really screws things up. Basically that's what happened. The web deployment project, for whatever reason, does not 'activate' the global asax file.

Only use publish.

Sad, it shouldn't have to be this hard.
