The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Web app built for IE 6 displays incorrectly in IE 7

Tags: VB.NET, ASP.NET, IE 7
Good afternoon,

I have found some solutions to my problem on EE and the Internet... but most seem to reference CSS issues, or the like.  I am wanting a firm answer on what my problem is.

The situation is that I developed (using IE 6) a rather large website/web app that is a company's Intranet page.  The company uses this quite a bit.  They are wishing to upgrade to IE 7, however, and the pages do not look correct.  In general, the pages are cut in half.

I have all code to these pages available if you need.  I have attached two pictures to demonstrate the issue.

Thanks.

Does you page display correctly in FireFox?

05.08.2008 at 11:48AM PDT, ID: 21527382
I have not tried it in FireFox.  I can try downloading it... however, it would be an entirely different discussion to switch browsers for the company.

Also, I notice the IE 7 picture should be full screen... I took the screenshot with an extended desktop.  Sorry about that.

Thanks for the help.

Try to insert the attached code snippet in your Web.config file. It needs to be within <system.web> section. It works for me.

Or, you can download it from the official web site at: http://slingfive.com/pages/code/browserCaps/
The link is also in the code snippet I attached.

I tried inserting this code.  No change.

This appears to be focused on browsers other than IE, is this correct?  I do not believe it is feasible, at this time, to switch browsers.

Any other ideas?

Then check your CSS file.

Did you set the HEIGHT value of a control?

Sounds like a mis-placed </table> tag.

05.08.2008 at 02:00PM PDT, ID: 21528437
I checked the CSS and I have no height specifiied.  In this specific page, I am using an iframe... however, I checked another web app which does not have this and it has the same display.

I have seen some postings elsewhere that indicate there is a CSS compatability issue with IE 7... but haven't found any specific "LOOK FOR THIS" items...

Still looking.

Thanks.

Mis-placed closing tag.  Point the html at a validator and it ought to find something.

05.15.2008 at 08:53AM PDT, ID: 21574997
jcoehoorn, can you explain the validator?  I've never used one.

I tried the page in FireFox and it appears the same as in IE7.  I tried manually setting the height and it did enlarge the panel properly... but, is this required?

I just mean a service that will check whether your html is valid.  Something like this:
http://validator.w3.org/

I've seen pages cut off at the knees, as it were, before, and it's usually come down to a mis-placed closing tag- perhaps </table> or </div>- that was leading the browser to decided a large portion of the page is already rendered.

05.15.2008 at 11:03AM PDT, ID: 21576501
I tried running it through the validator, but it received over 100 errors.  Some of the errors seem a little incorrect, as the basic format was created by Visual Studio.
