The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Best Practises: Display content depending on permissions

Hi Experts,

I'm currently having a row with my website. When the users login there are several cookies that I set, i.e.

Response.Cookies("isadmin").Value = 1
Response.Cookies("istrainer").Value = 0

They may be 0 or 1 depending on that value from the SQL database. However, my cookies are mis-behaving, I know the cookie is being set in the login page, but when the user is being re-directed to their home page, I test the value of the cookie to see if the user should be shown a menu, but I am getting this error:

Exception Details: System.FormatException: Input string was not in a correct format.
If Not IsNothing(Request.Cookies("isdealeradmin")) Then
Line 325: If Convert.ToInt32(Request.Cookies("isdealeradmin").Value) = 1 Then <-- this line here
Line 326: Dim menuDealerships As New MenuItem
Line 327: menuDealerships.Text = " " & objLL.getMenuLiteral("Dealership", lid)

As you can see I am testing for a Nothing value but it is still erroring. What is more infuriating is this used to work for most users, a new user has registered today and it is not working for them. I have checked the column value in the database and it is set (0) so it has a value.

The question is 2 fold, shall I persevere with cookies and if so can you see what is wrong, or

Shall I bin cookies and if so what are you suggestions to show content directed at particular users.

I know the ASP:Membership Provider and Roles can achieve this sort of thing, but we are under the hammer for time constraints so I may need to look at those at a later date.
