Handle Reference Constraint and notify user?

We have a Category table (ID, Category)
We have a Plans table (ID, Title, CatID)
We have a relationship enforcing not being able to delete a record from the Category table, if its ID is still being utilized in records in the Plans table.

We have a simple GridView that allows editing/deleting of the Category table.
When deleting a Category that is still being referenced in records in the Plans table, it of course throws the Reference Constraint error.

What I would rather do is somehow catch that Reference Constraint error and just simply set some label.text on the page to "cannot delete - this cat ID is still in use in teh Plans table"

Any idea on how to do that?

You can use SQL Exception in your catch statement and check for error code 547. Once if this error code is encountered you will trap it and display your label with the desired text.

Any chance I could see that in a VB.net implementation? I haven't gotten to try/catch statements in my ASP.NET VB programming books yet... (yes, very much still a newbie!)

I did figure out a solution however by programming a Sub for my DataSource: see code snippet

In this case VB.net looks just like C# without curly braces.
