Question

CheckBoxList loses state

Asked by: RedKelvin

Hi,
I have an asp.net CheckBoxList, that loses it's items on post back, and therefore it's selected state.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

// inside page load
if (cbl.Items.Count == 0)
{
    cbl.DataSource = dt;
    cbl.DataBind();
}

I think in your case that you should only bind the control if not isPostBack.

by: RedKelvinPosted on 2009-01-19 at 19:01:58ID: 23416841

yeah I tried that, but if I do that, the list items are not recreated

by: expertsoulPosted on 2009-01-19 at 19:41:43ID: 23416997

Can you post HTML mark up for cbl? Also any other related code.

by: RedKelvinPosted on 2009-01-19 at 19:53:56ID: 23417061

Here is the markup for the control, there is no other code acting on it, server or client side.

Cheers

											<asp:CheckBoxList ID="cbl" runat="server" DataTextField="description" DataValueField="code" Width="150px" BorderStyle="Solid" BorderWidth="1px" BorderColor="CadetBlue" >

put viewstate enabled for your control and bind the control only at

not postback of the page. This way the items will be created and

the selection remain unchanged during the postback

Hope this helps....

by: RedKelvinPosted on 2009-01-19 at 21:57:07ID: 23417565

thanks, but the viewstate is enabled. For some reason the control needs the items re-added on each postback, as they are lost.

I have other controls, such as dropdownlists on the same page, and they behave fine.

by: urvinayanPosted on 2009-01-19 at 22:50:18ID: 23417749

could u please paste the snippet of the whole design page..(aspx)

I mean all including the other controls as well..

by: praveenvenuPosted on 2009-01-19 at 22:53:21ID: 23417759

why are you using
if (cbl.Items.Count == 0)

remove the if statement. It will work

by: RedKelvinPosted on 2009-01-20 at 14:57:52ID: 23425272

praveenvenu
I was using that line to see if the items in the list were gone, if so, I was putting them back.

Removing the if statement has no effect.

Hi there,
I have solved this issue,
The problem is that I was reloading the items in page load, but the viewstate attempts to reset the state of the control before this event.

I moved the checkboxlist binding to page_init, and it is all happy.

Thanks for your efforts.
