But without the post back. I'm trying to avoid purejavascript - and would prefer something in Ajax - but ai can't find any examples. can anyone point me in a direction?

You could do it all the "traditional" way and then wrap it in a Update Panel.
You say "I'm trying to avoid purejavascript" but AJAX is Asyncronous Javascript and XML. I don't know of any prebuilt ajax controls, which means if it's AJAX that you want you've got some Javascript writng to do, unless you do my first sugestion?
