Question

Dynamically add SelectedIndexChanged to DropDownList

Asked by: AWSHelpdesk

In my code for a page I am looping through some items and their children in our database and dynamically creating DropDownLists.

I was wondering how I could go about adding a SelectedIndexChanged  to these DDL's?

Code for the setup of the DDL's and their items is below

Private Sub repSearchFilters_ItemDataBound(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.RepeaterItemEventArgs) Handles repSimpleWineSearchFilters.ItemDataBound
        Dim ddlFilter As DropDownList
        Dim lblSearchHeading As Label

        Dim taxon As CMDotNet.Common.Taxon.Taxon
        Dim repItem As Catalog.ShopTaxonomyFilters
        If e.Item.ItemType = ListItemType.Item Or ListItemType.AlternatingItem Then
            ddlFilter = e.Item.FindControl("ddlFilter")
            lblSearchHeading = e.Item.FindControl("lblSearchHeading")
            repItem = CType(e.Item.DataItem, Catalog.ShopTaxonomyFilters)
            taxon = CMDotNet.Common.Taxon.TaxonDAL.Instance.GetTaxon(repItem.TaxonomyID)

            If Not taxon Is Nothing Then
                If taxon.blnInUse Then
                    lblSearchHeading.Text = taxon.name & "..."
                    ddlFilter.Items.Add(New ListItem("please select", "none"))
                    'If taxon.name = "White" Then
                    Dim ParentName As String = taxon.parent_name
                    ddlFilter.Attributes.Add("SelectedIndexChanged", "ddlFilter_SelectedIndexChanged(" + ParentName + ")")
                    'End If
                    PopulateChildTaxonomy(ddlFilter, repItem.TaxonomyID, "..")
                End If
            End If

        End If
    End Sub

    Private Sub PopulateChildTaxonomy(ByVal ddlFilter As DropDownList, ByVal parentTaxonID As Integer, Optional ByVal separator As String = "")
        Dim subTaxon As CMDotNet.Common.Taxon.Taxon
        Dim subTaxonColl As CMDotNet.Common.Taxon.TaxonCollection

        subTaxonColl = CMDotNet.Common.Taxon.TaxonDAL.Instance.GetOnParent(parentTaxonID)
        For Each subTaxon In subTaxonColl

            If subTaxon.blnInUse Then
                ddlFilter.Items.Add(New ListItem(separator + subTaxon.name, subTaxon.taxon_id))
                PopulateChildTaxonomy(ddlFilter, subTaxon.taxon_id, separator + "..")
            End If
        Next
    End Sub

Change AutoPostBack property of your dropdownlists to True, then write code in SelectedIndexChanged

Also to avoid refreshing the whole page, you can use UpdatePanel.

I have done this, added AutoPostBack  True and it still is not firing for some reason?

Africans: I have done what this topic said and added AddHandler ddlFilter.SelectedIndexChanged, AddressOf FilterChild

is FilterChild a vb routine? because I have set it up and one and still no luck!

Hi AWSHelpdesk,
Regarding to FilterChild, yes it is a vb routine, but this routine raises only when dropdownlist properity AutoPostBack has been set to True.

By the way MsgBox don't work in ASP.NET, try to write something else to check if your code is executed or not.

Good Luck

Could be obvious but, have you tried to add the event handler outside the databound event, for example on page_load, only to check if there it works.

by: AWSHelpdeskPosted on 2009-08-17 at 16:25:13ID: 25119221

I have set AutoPostBack to true and still to no avail, i have debugged and it is not getting called

So add this: AddHandler ddlFilter.SelectedIndexChanged, AddressOf FilterChild on page load?

How will this work when the loop created 4 different DDL's do I run the loop again in Page Load?

It seems to be adding it ok, this is how the DDL renders, but it just isn't firing

<select id="ctl00_repSimpleWineSearchFilters_ctl00_ddlFilter" class="aePsItem" selectedindexchanged="FilterChild()" name="ctl00$repSimpleWineSearchFilters$ctl00$ddlFilter">
<option value="none">please select</option>
<option value="38">..Dessert</option>
<option value="39">..Fortifieds</option>
<option value="6">..Mixed</option>
<option value="4">..Red</option>
<option value="40">..Rose</option>
<option value="41">..Sparkling</option>
<option value="5">..White</option>
</select>

Event handler for selectedindexchanged must be of this kind:
Private Sub FilterChild (ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs)

I don't know why you're not receiving a compilation error !
