Instead of using a dropdown, you can use a gridview the will list all the names and "active status". Another solution is very similar to what strickdd mentioned, except you can use two gridviews.

I have record data that is displayed on an asp.net page using the DetailView data control with one item being UserID. The username is displayed using a label on the ItemTemplate and dropdownlist for Insert and Edit template and writes the UserID to the appropriate table.
Let's assume the tblUser table has a DeleteInd to deactivate users.
Is the best practice to populate the dropdownlist with active users for Insert and active users unioned with the user on the record being displayed? Basically, how do you only show active in the dropdownlist without causing a data error when they need to edit something historically?

create the list using the <optgroup> and have a group of Active and a group of Inactive users. You can do it by simply writing the <select> tag yourself, or use this approach:http://weblogs.as p.net/jeff /archive/2 006/12/27/ dropdownli st- with-op tgroup.asp x
