I agree; every app I have developed myself, or seen from other parties, uses DataWedge. It is true that there are ways to control the scanner programatically, but DataWedge precludes the need by firing scanner and capturing data any time the trigger is pulled.
We used to use ScanWedge, but were frustrated with how it would intermittently quit firing the laser for unknown reasons. Symbol tech support recommended the newer DataWedge as the replacement, saying it would work more reliably. But in our experience, DataWedge still arbitrarily dies and requires the user to start the program back up.
Unfortunately we have not been able to come up with a better alternative.

can you use Datawedge/Scanwedge utility which is usually present on Symbol devices instead of AX? It should scan the barcode and place it in the textbox recently in focus.
it doesn't give you the freedom to scan from anywhere, but at least you don't need to bother about scanning itself at all
