Question

Where to find user account component?

Asked by: brettr

I'd like to have a place on my site that clients can log into and view details about past projects and download files specfic to them.  Maybe even a section to post private communication.  Rather than building all of this from scratch, is there anything available in asp.net or PHP that I can install on my server?

This is the sort of thing that is usually a component of a Content Management System ("CMS") or a Framework.  Popular CMS systems include Wordpress, Joomla and Drupal.  One of the most popular Frameworks is the Zend Framework.

I beg to differ Ray. This sort of functionality is usually included in collaboration systems, or groupware. Basecamp is a popular collaboration system, but it's not something you can install on your server. Group Office (http://www.group-office.com/) can and it has all the features you're after.

I take your point - there is a lot more to this than "log into the site" but that has to be a part of it.  Sounds sort of like an intranet.

@Ray
How do those provide the features I want such as the client being able to downloads/upload files and a place for the client and myself to post messages?  I don't want each client viewing the other client's info/content.

Group Office is neat but is there something that is maybe more stripped down and free?

All of the CMS I mentioned have lots of add-ons and plug-ins.  By "lots" I mean hundreds, in open source.

Maybe I am misunderstanding what you mean by "client" - I was thinking "client / server" but it sounds like you might want something more like a set of "intranet-like" directories on your web site.  Is that more in line?

Group Office has a GPL version at SourceForge. http://sourceforge.net/projects/group-office/

@Ray

By client I mean a customer.  So, similar to how you might log into newegg.com and view your past orders.  You have your own login and content relevant to you.

To make this a little simpler and hopefully get some responses on an old question, is there something available that will allow a user to log in and manage files they upload and I have the ability to display particular files for download for this particular user?  The account is respective of the user.  So, userA might see 10 files to download while userB might only see two.   UserA may see an audit for three files they have uploaded in the past while userB sees five files they have uploaded.  Basically, a file upload/download management system.

I was thinking of even DropBox since it seems there isn't anything available on the web.  Any ideas?
