Which parameter type do I use if I want to reference a string variable?

I am writing out a gridview SELECT statement.  I am looking down the list of the types of parameters I can use to talk to parts of the page such as controlparameter, cookieparameter, etc but I can't seem to find one that will pull from a variable in memory such as strUsername.  

How should I talk to this string?  Is there a syntax example?
