The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

ASP code to invoke executable and display file content to client browser

Tags: ASP code for server side executable, IE 5 and above
Hi,
I am creating a workflow application for Process Engineering application in ASP using IIS 5.x. At one stage CADD drawing is generated and is stored in the fileserver. Now, I need to display the generated file in the client browser. I have the Volvo Express application on my Application server, which can display the CADD drawing file format. My question is what is the code or configurations required on the server side to invoke the Volvo express application and display the file in the web browser. I would appreciate to recieve a clear and precise solution for my problem.
Regards.

Volo will have to be installed on the client machine inorder to view your cad file.  While it's possible to start a .exe using a .dll it's not recommended or at least at my end not permitted.  Besides, if you try to open more than one instance of Volo on the server, it's likely to cause problems, in fact Volo might even not allow more than one CAD file to be open at one time.  For efficiency and safety, just have the client install Volo and let them download the CAD file.

The reply is somewhat similar to what I had in mind. Now I have two options
1. I have the Adobe Professional 6.0 installed on the App server and i would like to know whether i can convert the CADD drawing from Volvo window into pdf format. I have done this before, but i donot want a interactive conversion and would prefer for an automatic conversion on the server side.
2. Secondly, Is it posible to have a silent install of volvo on the client machine?. Since I am naive to such application codings, sample codes in this regard would be helpful to solve my problem.

First of all, what is "Volvo CADD"?  I know of the Volo viewer, is that what you mean?  I don't think an automatic conversion is possible on this type of file using Volo, however there are a number of tools available that will convert .dxf files to .pdf, some cheap, some not.  Most will do batch conversion but none that I saw will do an auto-conversion.  Just do a Google search on ".dxf to .pdf converter"
As for doing a "silent install" of Volo on a client, doubtful, if this was possible every virus maker would be installing .exe's on our machines at every possible page source.

Yes, its Volvo Viewer that i had been referring to.
Its true that silent install would mean a sequel to virus entry. There are nearly 400 odd client machines in my LAN and thought it would be a huge task installing VOLVO viewer in each of these desktops.

Regarding the conversion from .dxf format , how about using the print option to convert into pdf format.
Any how thanks for the advisory comments and feedback.
Shall park this question for solutions from the forum.

Talk to your IT dept about doing a batch upgrade if you want to install the viewer on each client, otherwise if it were me I would invest in one of the many DXF/DWG to PDF batch converters available, many of them cost less than $50.  You can even create a smple script that the Scheduler can run every night to check for new CAD files and convert them to PDF.  This in my opinion would be your best solution.

And I still can not find any product called "Volvo Viewer".

Dear Moderator, Can I kindly call upon you to close this incident. I have got a solution for this myself.

Hi,
After a serach in Adobe site and blogs related to Adobe I found out that Adobe Professional 8.0 is capable of converting CADD drawings into pdf. The following links are related to my issue.
http://blogs.adobe.com/timhuff/2007/02/acrobat_lines_merge_adjustment.html
http://blogs.adobe.com/acrolaw/30_dirty_tricks.pdf
Fortunately we had recently upgraded to Adobe Creative Suite version 8.0.
My CADD engineer will create adobe drawings and click the adobe icon placed in the AUTOCADD software. This converts the dwg files to pdf directly.
BTW the CADD viewer software Autodesk volvo view.
Anyway thanks for all the inputs.

First of all, it's not "Volvo" viewer, it's called Volo Viewer, I have version 3 on my laptop.  And while you may have found a solution, it has nothing to do with what you requested in your original question.  You were looking for a way to have a .DXF file dispayed on a client without installing a DXF viewer, I believe I answered that question.  The you asked about doing a conversion on the DXF files to a PDF format, I gave you a number of options that would solve your issue.  Running a small Schedule file on the DXF files every night is probably going to be a lot more efficient and more absolute over telling the engineer to hit a button when saving a file.  I'm willing to bet that 50% of the time the PDF is not created.

Dude, this forum is for suggestions and ideas, it doesn't cost you anything, it's 100 points.
