The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

WCF: 'Specify username in ClientCredentials' error

Asked by dparkes in Web Services and WCF, C# Programming Language, Web Services

Tags: C#, WCF

Hi, I am completely new to WCF.  My goal is to use a service on one server to connect to multiple C# Windows application clients.

I got the service running on my web server (a shared asp host, no SSL or dedicated IP), and the service display a web page telling me to create a class and code file using svcutil.exe.

I placed the class and code file in my C# app, and everything seems to be ok so far.

I call the class using a test button, and it instantiates with no error.

But when I call the "Hello world" function, I expect it to return a string, but instead I get the message:

"The username is not provided. Specify username in ClientCredentials."

So I added a password and username to my method which now looks like this:

        private void button2_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
        {
            MyServiceClient client = new MyServiceClient();
            client.ClientCredentials.UserName.UserName = "xyz";
            client.ClientCredentials.UserName.Password = "123";

            // Use the 'client' variable to call operations on the service.
            textBox4.Text = client.MyOperation1("dave");

            // Always close the client.
            client.Close();
        }

Is this where I am supposed to enter the username and password on the client side?  And where do I set the username password on the server?  Or am I completely going in the wrong direction?

I know there are a lot of config permutations so I attached my web.config file.

Also attached is the service.cs file from the web server.

Thank you.
