Question

Embed Flash in VB.NET / C# application compact framework

Asked by: bhermer

Hi,

I have looked high and low for an example of how to embed a flash object in my WinCE/PocketPC application, cant find a working example though, in fact I cant even get the toolbar to show the flash player.

I have VS 2005 and Flash 8, Can anyone help here?

I need to be able to send commands to the flash app, either through xml or any other medium, though just getting it embeded in my app would be a start.

Thanks

I am not certain if this article will be helpful to you but it might be worth reviewing: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa446494.aspx

Yes, I have seen that article and downloaded it, I get the error:

Could not find type 'Odyssey.CFCOM.ComControl'. Please make sure that the assembly that contains this type is referenced. If this type is a part of your development project, make sure that the project has been successfully built.

The variable 'flashPlayer' is either undeclared or was never assigned.

And as the DLL  isnt in the download I am a little stuck with it!

There is an FAQ "Does CFCOM support Visual Studio 2005?" at http://www.odysseysoftware.com/Support/FAQ/tabid/84/Default.aspx

They state that the reference and code have to be added manually and they have a sample C# project listed. Perhaps it has some information that is useful for your project.

Hi,

I found a blog that looks like it has some details that might be able to help you overcome this challenge.

Tim Walters .NET Blog
http://weblogs.asp.net/twalters/archive/2003/07/17/10185.aspx

Also, you tried the Compact Framework's Web Browser control? If you take and application and place the web browser control on the form and then load a simple html page with a simple flash that might be an approach as well.

You might want to start with a flash sample that you have seen work in IE Mobile first and then move to your application.

Hope that helps! Let me know if not.

Hi LordOfPorts, Yes I see that there, trouble is that is a paid component and I am loathed to put the cost of the license into the price of my app for something which should be simple!

CJCraft, I can do that, and have done so to check I can load swf files, what I cant do when it is in a browser control is interact with the swf file, I want to be able to send values to the swf from my compiled code.

In that article he says 'Now I just wonder if there's a way to get/send commands to the Flash object in the hosted HTMLViewer?'  thats the exact problem I have!!

I have a sensor suite hooked into a serial port on the pocket pc and I want to be able to display guages and dynamic graphs as the data is collected, flash would be the ideal medium as it has animation etc that even an idiot like me can use!! I want to avoid painting forms and all the other horrible stuff!
