Question

Create a shortcut on Windows Mobile using Visual Basic

Asked by: Cyber-Storm

Hi,

I need to implement a setting on Windows Mobile to create a shortcut in the windows startup folder.

The implementation requires that the user be allowed to select an option in the applications setup screen to create (or remove) the shortcut.  That's easy.

The next step is to create the shortcut, that's easy in the normal framework by way of the windows script host but this doesn't appear in the .net Compact Framework that I can see.  Would someone please be so kind as to point me in the right direction?  Even if it doesn't use the script host, any elegant solution would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Storm

Hi,

I believe you could use the function SHCreateShortcut.

Check this link http://www.pinvoke.net/default.aspx/coredll/SHCreateShortcut.html

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your response, if you could perhaps help me a little further please.  Below you will see my code, but I keep getting a NotSupportedException error even when I attempt to run a basic implementation of SHCreateShortcut.

I've also read the documentation from Microsoft regarding this feature and it all "looks" right but I'm obviously doing something wrong somewhere

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee506084.aspx

Many Thanks,

Storm

  Public Declare Function SHCreateShortcut Lib "coredll" (ByVal szShortcut As System.Text.StringBuilder, ByVal szTarget As System.Text.StringBuilder)

    Try
      Dim ShortcutLocation As New System.Text.StringBuilder(IO.Path.Combine("\Windows\StartUp", "test.lnk"))
      Dim ShortcutTarget As New System.Text.StringBuilder("""\Program Files\testapp\testapp.exe""")

      If SHCreateShortcut(ShortcutLocation, ShortcutTarget) = True Then
        MsgBox("Success")
      Else

you should get the windows startup path with SHGetSpecialFolderPath, i am attaching code snippet but it is in c#.

   [DllImport("coredll.dll")]
    static extern int SHGetSpecialFolderPath(IntPtr hwndOwner, StringBuilder lpszPath, int nFolder, int fCreate);
    [DllImport("coredll.dll")]
    static extern int SHCreateShortcut(StringBuilder szShortcut, StringBuilder szTarget);

    const int CSIDL_PROGRAMS = 2;  // \Windows\Start Menu\Programs

    // Get location of "Programs" folder
    StringBuilder programs = new StringBuilder(255);
    SHGetSpecialFolderPath((IntPtr)0, programs, PlatformUtil.CSIDL_PROGRAMS, 0);

    StringBuilder shortcutLocation = new StringBuilder(Path.Combine(programs.ToString(), "Foo.lnk");
    // Note that we quote the path
    StringBuilder shortcutTarget = new StringBuilder("\"" + @"\Program Files\Foo\Foo.exe" + "\"");
    bool rv = PlatformUtil.SHCreateShortcut(shortcutLocation, shortcutTarget);

Yeah, I get that and I have it in my app, but I'm trying just THE MOST BASIC implementation to try and figure out where the problem is rather than complicate the code going back and forth.

I know the windows folder is \Windows and the program files folder is \Program Files on this unit (I know it's not always that way which is why I said "this unit").

Once I have it working, I'll put it together in a proper solution

Could you try this

Public Declare Function SHCreateShortcut% Lib "coredll" (ByVal szShortcut As System.Text.StringBuilder, ByVal szTarget As System.Text.StringBuilder)

    Try
      Dim ShortcutLocation As New System.Text.StringBuilder(IO.Path.Combine("\Windows\StartUp", "test.lnk"))
      Dim ShortcutTarget As New System.Text.StringBuilder("""\Program Files\testapp\testapp.exe""")

      If SHCreateShortcut(ShortcutLocation, ShortcutTarget) = True Then
        MsgBox("Success")
      Else
        MsgBox("Failed")
      End If

    Catch ex As Exception
      MsgBox(ex.Message)
    End Try

OK, here we go, all working.  I'm placing the code here for any future people looking for a (WORKING!) solution can grab this.  All the other code I got was buggy in one way or another.

This working example creates a shortcut in the startup folder of windows but it's written to allow any shortcut to be created virtually anywhere as well as an extra tool to get a special folder.

Thanks for the help!
