Question

How to return identity primary key on insert

Hi Experts.
I have a feeling there must be a way for LINQ to automatically return the primary identity field value upon the insert.

I'm executing something simple like this:

PhoneTypes.InsertOnSubmit(new PhoneType { Name = values[0] });
SubmitChanges();

and right now have to use this to return the latest added Identity:
int lastPhoneTypeId= PhoneTypes.Select(o => o.Id).Max();

I'm sure there is a better way just to return that ID right when you do the insert. Does anyone know how ?

I have read this is not possible and you have to put the insert and the scope_indentity in a stored procedure, so you can return it there.

I assume you're talking about ExecuteCommand("SELECT identity_scope()"); ?

What's interesting is SQL Server actually gets the SCOPE_IDENTITY() as one of the parameters if you look at the SQL Trace while LINQ is doing its insert thing. There must be something ... :-/

Get your PhoneType into a variable before inserting it. Something like this:

PhoneType ph = new PhoneType  { Name = values[0] };

Then insert as you were:

PhoneTypes.InsertOnSubmit(ph);
SubmitChanges();

You can now get the newly inserted ID like this:

int newlyInsertedID = ph.Id;

I"m going to try it, thank you.
I'd think you need to have some kind of "WHERE" clause when pulling that ID in the end.... otherwise how does it know which id am I trying to pull ?
