The return type of such a query is of type Anonymous and can not be used outside of the function or method it was created in. One thing you can do to get around this issue is to create a class with properties of all the return items, see snippet below. Then in the query assign the values to a class member as shown below. In the code snippet the return type should be List<MyResults>.

YOu quesiton does not give enough info, what you are doing will work, not sure what you mean by "cast the results so I can return to a calling method" cast to what?
