Webform controls

I am new to VB.Net and I am experiencing some difficulty in working with the ASP walkthroughs.  

When putting an HTML button control on the page, the control appears in the browser.
(Note the control does not respond to events).
When putting a WebForm button control on the page, the control does not appear.

Did I miss something in the installation?
