The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

vb to vb .net, asp to asp. net vb .net or c#  What the heck do I really need to learn?

Asked by jbaisden in .NET

Hi all. I'm a jr. programmer/crystal report designer. I am currently programming in vb 6 sp5. My question is one of direction. I don't know vb 6 to well, had 4 years of C++ 6.0 in college and never skimmed anything about windows messaging or gui development. I want to be a full time programmer -- the crystal stuff aside, though, I'm sure that having it can't hurt my resume. I am simply swamped with what I need to learn. I have no clue what the industry is looking for right now. I know that there are enough vb 6 progs to be maintained for many many years so vb 6 seems to be an okay route; however, that sticks me in the past.

What I need is some guidance here. All you experts that are Sr. programmers or management types in IT shops, please help me on this one!

What is it that you guys want in a programmer that you're looking to hire? I am not trying to solicit myself or anything like that; however, I am 23, have a "real job", about to get married and don't know how I can pay all my bills on my current Salary. I have to evolve and I know this.

So do I learn vb .net or c#. VB 6 or c++ 6 (however great a language this is, I didn't see more than a few adds actually hiring for this. I figure development costs are simply too much). ASP or ASP .net

I haven't mastered or even gone too far in any of these languages. The .net class framework is so darn vast I get nauseous when I read even a small list of classes.

I am a programmer at heart with a programmer's mind, but have never been the type to just sit down and figure it out very well. I guess I need to learn how to do that now.

I need books and site suggestions for absolute beginners. I'm talking baby feeding material here. Then if you could provide like a seriers of books for what to do next. Or even ideas for applications that would be good to learn from and build on. Code examples that show the RIGHT way to program.

I know I am asking a lot. I would greatly appreciate ANY input ANYONE has on this topic; however, the input from those who do this stuff on a day to day basis I would value the most--Professors included.

Thank you for all your help. I am making this 500 points as I am sure that the points will need to be split up in the end. Thanks again!
