Hi RonaldBiemans,

Thanks for the reply.  But I was more interested in .NET implementation.  I see that there are a lot of API calls and it would be very hard to convert all of those to .NET. :(  Issues like compatibility and speed, etc are a main concern.  If there is a solution out there that is *pure* .NET, that is better.

:)

I haven't found one yet, but could you not use 2 richtextboxes (One readonly)

by: RonaldBiemansPosted on 2004-05-12 at 09:27:02ID: 11051589

Or you could use a grid without gridlines

Unfortunately no.  I am building a code repository...  users have to type/edit code.

I haven't found one yet but maybe this will help you on your way, create to richtextboxes next to each other.
This will count the correct lines, you will see if you test this.
If you tweek this code I think it will do what you want

    Private Sub RichTextBox1_KeyUp(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.KeyEventArgs) Handles RichTextBox1.KeyUp
        Dim x As Point = RichTextBox1.GetPositionFromCharIndex(RichTextBox1.SelectionStart)
        Dim curline As Integer
        Dim curposchar As Integer
        curline = RichTextBox1.GetLineFromCharIndex(RichTextBox1.SelectionStart).ToString()
        curposchar = RichTextBox1.GetCharIndexFromPosition(x)

        ReDim RichTextBox2.Lines(curline + 1)

        gotoline(RichTextBox2, curline, 0)
        RichTextBox2.SelectedText = telchar(RichTextBox1.Text, CStr(curposchar))
        RichTextBox1.Focus()
    End Sub

    Private Function telchar(ByVal str As String, ByVal lt As Integer) As Integer
        Dim i As Integer = 0
        Dim tel As Integer = 0
        For i = 1 To lt
            If str.Chars(i) = vbLf Then
                tel += 1
            End If
        Next
        Return tel
    End Function

Hi RonaldBiemans,

I tried and there are a couple of things I found.

1.  The previous line number disappear when a new one is displayed.  On the redim portion?

2.  Its not working when wordwrap toggled.  Is it because of 1?

Thanks,

I'm still working on it, I think I've solved the first issue. But a question on the second, is wordwrap always on or off, or must the user be able to switch (I don't like the last option ;-)  ) ?

by: harris_cPosted on 2004-06-14 at 17:42:23ID: 11311526

The user is able to switch it on/off.

Please post solution for #1.

Thanks,

There still is an issue with synchronized scrolling I need to solve. Replace the previous Keyup with this one

    Private Sub RichTextBox1_KeyUp(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.KeyEventArgs) Handles RichTextBox1.KeyUp
        Dim x As Point = RichTextBox1.GetPositionFromCharIndex(RichTextBox1.SelectionStart)
        Dim curline As Integer
        Dim curposchar As Integer
        curline = RichTextBox1.GetLineFromCharIndex(RichTextBox1.SelectionStart).ToString()
        curposchar = RichTextBox1.GetCharIndexFromPosition(x)
        ReDim Preserve RichTextBox2.Lines(RichTextBox1.GetLineFromCharIndex(RichTextBox1.Text.Length) + 1)
        Dim nlines() As String = RichTextBox2.Lines
        nlines(curline) = telchar(RichTextBox1.Text, CStr(curposchar))
        RichTextBox2.Lines = nlines

        gotoline(RichTextBox2, curline, 0)
        RichTextBox2.ScrollToCaret()
        RichTextBox1.ScrollToCaret()
        RichTextBox1.Focus()
    End Sub
