comparing dates

Experts,

How do I do this in ASP.net/vb.net.  I have a sql query fro datagrid that returns 3 records.  For example:

Series      Dis_date
1              11/10/1992
1              12/1/1996
1              1/1/2005

The datagrid should display only one record which has the latest dis_date i.e., 1/1/2005 out of all teh other dates.  Do I just need to change Sql query ?  or I have to create a new sub.  Please help me with the code.

modiffy your query
select Series, max(Dis_date) Disate
from yourtable/subquery as 'table alias'
group by Series

So I cannot use Select *, do I have to write all the column names to get max date.  There are some more columns in that table, with series and date.

I am unable to include other fields due to grouping, can you please suggest any other way.  Can nested sql stmt work here.  If yes, how ?

try this:

Select t1.Series, t1.Dis_date
  From
 (Select Series,Dis_date from TableName ) t1,
 (Select Series,max(Dis_date) as Disdate  from TableName group by Series) t2
where t1.Series = t2.Series
and t1.Dis_date = t2.DisDate

you can use SQL
select Top 1 from Table where ....
order by YourDate Desc

even, for brevity you can use Select * From TableName

SELECT t1.*
FROM
(Select * from TableName) AS t1,
(Select Series,max(Dis_date) as Disdate  from TableName group by Series) AS t2
WHERE t1.Series=t2.Series AND t1.Dis_date=t2.DisDate
