The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

allow user entry in DataGridViewComboBox
Tags: DataGridViewComboBox, VB.net, .net, Datagridview, combobox, bound
I have a DataGridViewComboBox that is bound to a simple "lookup" dataset (5 sec = 500, 10 sec = 1000, etc.) How do I allow a user to manually enter a different time (i.e. 3400) in the DataGridViewComboBox?

Thanks for the assist....

I've Googled the heck out of this and have found a few examples in C#. Alas, I barely know VB.Net

Hello judsonhh,

To save us both time, please type a link to a promising example in C#, and I will try to translate the relevant code into VB.NET for you

Regards,

Dabas

I'll look and find it again ......

http://allthelayers.com/?p=16

I think this is what I'm trying to do.

If this isn't what I want (I simply want this column to list "normal" time possibiliies while allowing a user to manually enter their own times if neccessary), do you know how to populate a DGVComboBox with a list of values that operates like a "lookup" list and also allows for user entry?

02.18.2008 at 09:01AM PST, ID: 20921526
Here is some C# code i found that does what I need ( I think)
private void dataGridView1_CellValidating(object sender,
             DataGridViewCellValidatingEventArgs e)
{
    if (e.ColumnIndex == comboBoxColumn.DisplayIndex)
    {
        if (!this.comboBoxColumn.Items.Contains(e.FormattedValue))
        {
            this.comboBoxColumn.Items.Add(e.FormattedValue);
        }
    }
}

private void dataGridView1_EditingControlShowing(object sender,
            DataGridViewEditingControlShowingEventArgs e)
{
    if (this.dataGridView1.CurrentCellAddress.X == comboBoxColumn.DisplayIndex)
    {
        ComboBox cb = e.Control as ComboBox;
        if (cb != null)
        {
            cb.DropDownStyle = ComboBoxStyle.DropDown;
         }
    }
}

and attached is the code I'm trying. however I'm getting an InvalidCastException at the marked line. It says "Unable to cast object of type 'System.Windows.Forms.DataGridViewTextBoxColumn' to type 'System.Windows.Forms.DataGridViewComboBoxColumn'." when i click on the ComboBox.

judsonhh,

That error seems to indicate that your DataGridView.Columns(4) is of type TextBox and not ComboBox.
Maybe you are using the wrong column? Columns(4) is the FIFTH column, as numbering starts with zero.

That was "that" problem. Now it error s at the marked line with "ArgumentException was unhandled" ...Items collection cannot be modified when the DataSource property is set.

judsonhh,

What that means is that your DataGrid is bound to a datasource.
Any change you want to do, has to be done on the object that the grid is bound to, not the combobox itself.

In short, lets assume your ComboBox within the datagrid is bound to a DataTable, then you should be adding your item to the underlying DataTable, not to the ComboBox

Hmmm, that's what I was afraid of .... So there's no way to has a user editable DGVComboBox that is bound? How about a way to create a "lookup" ComboBox that is not bound?

judsonhh,

Changing these type of bound objects is quite easy if you use a Binding Object Programming (BOP) approach.

I suggest you have a look at a detailed explanation in http://www.paulstovell.net/blog/index.php/binding-patterns-0x0002-binding-to-objects/
Specially the videos that Paul Stovell lets you download there.
The 45 minutes (each) spent on viewing those presentations have saved me HOURS of work dealing with the type of problem you are experiencing.

Unfortunately his examples are in C#, but he does make an effort to explain the VB.NET approach too.
