Any API to gmail or hotmail?

Hi experts,

I'm building an app using .NET and I want to add functionality so that a user can automatically download their address books from there chosen email account such as gmail or hotmail.

Does anyone know of now I can achieve this, any API's or a link to some code or just a step in the write direction?

As far as I know, there isn't a public API to use with Hotmail (at least there wasn't last time a checked a while back), however there is a API in PHP (http://www.fgde.com.ar/hotmail-api.html).

Thanks guys, I'll have a read tonight.

When someone implements this though don't you have to ask then for their username and password in order to log into their account?

And isn't this a security rusk i.e. the site owner could save your password and use it as they like?
