The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

You can use regular expressions and iterate through a MatchCollection

        Dim blah As String = "FirstNameLastName"
        Dim mc As MatchCollection = Regex.Matches(blah, "[A-Z][a-z]*")

        For Each m As Regex.Match In mc
            doSomething(m.Value)
        Next

Whenever you need to split a line of text into separate words, it's possible to utilize a Split method of a String class. The Split method accepts a separator or an array of separators as a parameter (in your case an array of all capital letters)

I don't think String.Split will work for this purpose because the returned array of substrings EXCLUDES the delimiters.  So "FirstName" with a delimiter array of all capitals would be returned as "irst" and "ame".

You have also an option not to omit the delimiter when using split.

Public Function SplitOnCapitals(ByVal str As String) As String
    Dim sb As New StringBuilder()
    For Each c As Char In str
        If Char.IsUpper(c) AndAlso sb.Length > 0 Then
            sb.Append(" "C)
        End If
        sb.Append(c)
    Next
    Return sb.ToString()
End Function

What option would that be?  The only one I know of is StringSplitOptions - which governs whether to include empty elements not whether to include the delimiters.  I've just run the code below - with both alternatives for that option - and my results (both in VB.NET 2005 and VB.NET 2008) were

irst
ame
irst
ame

If there are others, can you please provide a code example, as it would be very useful

"FirstName" replace "F" or "N" with " F" " N"

'replace all occurrences
Dim result As String = System.Text.RegularExpressions.Regex.Replace("FirstName", "([A-Z])", " $1").Trim()
