Question

Date time string

Asked by: Trentos

Hello Experts,

I have a date string in my code behind what adds the current date to the end of a generated file it is as follows;

string Date = DateTime.Today.Day + DateTime.Today.Month + DateTime.Today.Year.ToString();

but the problem is the actual out put looks like this (today for example) instead of 24032009 it is 272009 the sring seems to be adding (addition) the day and month together then placing the year on the end.

how can I fix this so the instead of 272009 I get 24032009????

string Date = DateTime.Today.Day.ToString() + DateTime.Today.Month.ToString() + DateTime.Today.Year.ToString();

by: sinojPosted on 2009-03-23 at 22:49:05ID: 23965078

use
string Date = DateTime.Today.ToString("ddMMyyyy");

by: csenasaPosted on 2009-03-23 at 22:49:10ID: 23965079

Hi,

DateTime.Now.ToString() function can take arguments , (i., its a overloaded function) u can pass a datetime expression and get the date in required format.

Try this : DateTime.Now.ToString("ddMMyyyy");
[CODE]
string Date = DateTime.Now.ToString("ddMMyyyy");

Best Regards.

by: TrentosPosted on 2009-03-24 at 04:47:15ID: 23966865

I Tried all these solutions and it is still doing the same thing

by: informaniacPosted on 2009-03-24 at 04:52:43ID: 23966909

well this did work for me

string Date = DateTime.Today.ToString("ddMMyyyy");

as suggested by sinoj.

by: sinojPosted on 2009-03-24 at 04:54:30ID: 23966931

you mean the output of
DateTime.Today.ToString("ddMMyyyy");

is 272009 !!!

by: informaniacPosted on 2009-03-24 at 05:09:14ID: 23967057

the solution provided by sinoj should work, unless

1) U have changed the system time of the server
2) u r using a different culture.

by: TrentosPosted on 2009-03-24 at 05:27:03ID: 23967205

yes the output is 272009 the culture is AU and the server time is correct

Do you mind sharing your code block/file?

by: TiggeritoPosted on 2009-03-24 at 05:37:30ID: 23967328

Only your initial code would produce 272009 as it is accidentally doing maths instead of "adding" string together.

24 + 03 + "2009" = 27 + "2009" = "272009"

Non of the solutions provided could produce that result.

Really if you look at it it seems that is the case

Date is a string so (Date).ToString() should not be required.

I would rename Date to avoid possible confusion. either name it like your other local variables:

string todaysFileDate = DateTime.Today.ToString("ddMMyyyy");

or just directly convert as I've shown in the code snippet.

If this does not work, use your debugger to see what value Date becomes. Split out your file name generator into a seperate variable so you can also see it in the debugger (see snippet).

string fileName =
  "~/Portals/Projects/Stewardship/Agreement/" +
  ((GridDataItem)RadGrid1.SelectedItems[0]).GetDataKeyValue("ProposalID") +
  "_" +
  ((GridDataItem)RadGrid1.SelectedItems[0]).GetDataKeyValue("Name_Last") +
  "_LandManagersContract_" +
  DateTime.Today.ToString("ddMMyyyy") +
  ".Pdf";

bggw.ExportDocument(StiExportFormat.Pdf, fileName);

by: informaniacPosted on 2009-03-25 at 02:08:44ID: 23977142

Are you trying to say that DateTime.Now changed solved the problem instead of DateTime.Today?

Or is it something else

by: amar31282Posted on 2009-03-25 at 02:11:07ID: 23977155

It should not have affected as DateTime.Today also returns the same result.

I don't know why DateTime.Now worked for Trentos and not the DateTime.Today.

I am also surprised.

by: informaniacPosted on 2009-03-25 at 02:13:40ID: 23977175

Ya. Certainly. That answer would be best answered by Trentos.

Can Trentos please answer the question.

by: sinojPosted on 2009-03-25 at 02:41:45ID: 23977359

I have no Idea whats wrong with
DateTime.Today.ToString("ddMMyyyy");

I'm also waiting for the response from Trentos.

by: amar31282Posted on 2009-03-25 at 02:43:52ID: 23977373

Trentos please raise the curtain ...... :)

by: TrentosPosted on 2009-03-25 at 03:02:29ID: 23977488

No I think the reason was and this may sound silly (I have been getting some strange behaviour from Stimulsoft of recent) but when amar sugested adding the string below BGGW.Compile(); it seemed to work fine so weird

by: amar31282Posted on 2009-03-25 at 03:05:13ID: 23977511

I also think so.

I did it intentionally just as guess trial
but i think trial worked

by: informaniacPosted on 2009-03-25 at 03:16:26ID: 23977583

Whatever stimulsoft does..

The only thing that matters is we know why the code worked. Will help someone someday..
