Question

.NET Runtime 2.0 Error after BSOD and ChkDsk

Asked by: influx0

It all started with a BSOD while playing GTA IV, followed by a ChkDsk that deleted quite a few files which I thought was a good thing until windows loaded. Already I noticed things like login details for windows live messenger being wiped along with the 'remember me' settings. But that wasn't a big deal. What got me is that I could no longer play the game through my saves or online because GTA IV uses Games For Windows Live (GFWL) and that uses .NET Framework which seems to have got corrupted, or at least something corrupted is conflicting with it.

Tried opening the GFWL client through windows but all I see is a blue intro splash before an error crash. Re-installing with the latest version did nothing, tried repairing/modifying GTA IV too.

Ultimately I even tried to System Restore back a day but it wouldn't let me as apparantly "no changes" have been made, which is BS.

In Event Log under Applications there is an error that happens at the same time the GFWL client fails to open, it says .NET Runtime 2.0 Error. I have .NET Framework's 2.0/3.0/3.5 SP1 installed and did a repair on the 3.5, as well as a full re-install and complete clean with the .NET clean up utility which didn't help with the issue at hand. So I'm pretty stumped at what to do now, as well as annoyed.

Later on I tried several other restore points neither of which worked so this leads me to believe that my System Restore is also corrupted.

I should also include that by creating a new windows user account the applications work just fine. This is on Windows XP SP2.

With further troubleshooting to confirm the problem I ran http://wikipediaexplorer.blob.core.windows.net/wpf/WikipediaExplorer/publish.htm
This didn't work on the main account but worked and installed properly on the test user account.

I get the following error when attempting to install on the main account
Cannot Start Application; Application cannot be started - and after clicking on details:

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the game

by: influx0Posted on 2009-08-02 at 15:19:26ID: 25000813

Unfortunately that wouldn't change the circumstances as GTA IV requires GFWL in order to play, and in this case GFWL isn't working. More so I'm beginning to see it isn't just GFWL, it's the .NET error in general, which would apply to any application that uses it as I've also linked the results of the Wikipedia troubleshoot. So I think you may have misunderstood.

by: newyuppiePosted on 2009-08-02 at 15:33:56ID: 25000886

Wouldn't reinstalling the game also reinstall GFWL? It may be that the CHKDSK deleted some .NET necessary files, but the fact that you reinstall GFWL will probably install those files again.

by: influx0Posted on 2009-08-02 at 22:09:09ID: 25001979

That was one of the first things I tried. The repair option is pretty much a new install in itself and it deleted and re-installed GFWL. On top of that while troubleshooting I have re-installed GFWL many times. Since GFWL works as it should with a new windows user account why not on the main?

by: newyuppiePosted on 2009-08-03 at 04:30:32ID: 25003404

Repairing is not equivalent to uninstalling and reinstalling. In any case, sounds like in the end you will need to format your drive to bring things back to normal. I don't like to admit it either when these things happen, but the longer I wait to reformat, is like making the suffering longer. Sorry I can;t be of more help, good luck!

I appreciate you trying to help, and I'll try uninstall the game anyway. But since this error affects this account and not the other wouldn't that suggest the installation of these programs can't be the focus anymore? And surely if it works on a new user account then it can't be anything wrong within the windows/system folders either right? As they both use the same windows files therefore having to reformat would not be needed afterall.

I think that the C:\Documents and Settings folder\User folder has something corrupted in it. Maybe the temp folder for example, would it be safe to swap the temp folders of the main and test accounts around?

by: newyuppiePosted on 2009-08-05 at 19:13:04ID: 25029594

You could try to swap them but my guess is that nothing will happen out of that. After all temp folders are pretty much useless.

I wonder how many files does GFWL stores on your PC, since it's an online check right? Why would one account be corrupted and the other ones not?

Are you making progress?

After hours of painstaking trial and error I eventually managed to pinpoint the source of the problem.

The file UsrClass.dat located in C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows was corrupted at the time of the ChkDsk being run. Deletion of the Windows folder that contains the file using a different account and logging back in re-news the folder with a fresh UsrClass.dat in its place solved the issue.

If there is a will, there is a way.
