Microsoft SQL varbinary to string in VB.net

Hello,

When i run
Select bmrestdata,cast(substring(bmrestdata, 53,8) as varbinary(8))as Name

in the SQL management studio i get the value "0x53414C4553204649" in the column name.

i trie to get that in to a variable in VB.net but whatever i do i cant get it.

It doesnt mather if i transfear it to char instead of varbinary, i just cante get the same valu in vb.net as i get in the SQL manager.

Any ideas?

YZlat, the binary values ar not MD5 or hashed in any way.

Omego2K, thanks for that but i cant get the string 0x53414C4553204649 to the app in the first place, i get

running below code temp_restada gets the value " "ì0"

it seams like something is hapening with my value when i'm grabing it.. is it any other way to read out the value? if i get it in char or binary doesnt mather as long as i get something.

From what I understand you want that "0x53414C4553204649" varbinary value to display their ascii representation, in this case "SALES FI". Am I correct?

OMego2k, as long as i get either "0x53414C4553204649" or "Sales FI" to a variable in vb.net I'm happy.

but however i try to request that information from the sql i get weird values, byte arrays that i cant transfer to a string or empty stings.

So why not do something like this in sql server?

DECLARE @b varbinary(8);
SET @b = 0x53414C4553204649;
DECLARE @x varchar(MAX);
SET @x = @b;

SELECT @x, CAST(@b As varchar(20));

both selects in this case return varchar value of "SALES FI"

so how do i set b to bmrestdata ?

could you please write a small example how the sql querry should look? i'm sorry but i'm not to used working with sql.
