Question

Delete selected files (not the item) in checkedlistbox

Asked by: demteam

I'm searching for files on my C:\ with a specific extension and adding them to a checkedlistbox. I want to be able to select one or many of the items in the checkedlistbox and when I click my delete label, that it not only removes the item from the list but actually deletes the file(s) itself from the PC.

I'm posting what I've tried so far, but this is not working!

Private Sub Label5_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Label5.Click
        If CheckedListBox1.Items.Count > 0 Then
            For i As Integer = 0 To CheckedListBox1.Items.Count - 1
                File.Delete(CheckedListBox1.Items(i))
            Next i
        End If
    End Sub

Try this....

    Private Sub Label5_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Label5.Click
        If CheckedListBox1.CheckedItems.Count > 0 Then
For Each i As Integer In CheckedListBox1.CheckedIndices
                File.Delete(CheckedListBox1.Items(i))
            Next i
        End If
    End Sub

You can also simply enumerate the CheckedItems collection.

You don't *need* to check the count, because the enumeration will skip it if there's nothing to enumerate. You may want to, if you need to do something different if there are no checked items.

For Each filename As String In CheckedListBox1.CheckedItems
    File.Delete(filename)
Next

No, this didn't do anything, for reference, this is how the checkedlistbox is being populated..

  Dim folderInfo As New IO.DirectoryInfo("c:\windows\temp")
    Dim arrFilesInFolder() As IO.FileInfo
    Dim fileInFolder As IO.FileInfo
    Private Sub Form4_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load

  arrFilesInFolder = folderInfo.GetFiles("*.tmp",SearchOption.AllDirectories)
        For Each fileInFolder In arrFilesInFolder
            CheckedListBox1.Items.Add(fileInFolder.Name)
        Next

        For i As Integer = 0 To CheckedListBox1.Items.Count - 1
            CheckedListBox1.SetItemCheckState(i, CheckState.Unchecked)
        Next
    End Sub

the tmp file might locked by another process, also u need to concat the path where the files are located:

01.Const path As String = "c:\windows\temp"
02.For Each item In checkedListBox1.CheckedItems
03.    Dim file As String = Path.Combine(path, item.ToString())
04. Try
05. File.Delete(file)
06. Catch ex As Exception
07. MessageBox.Show(String.Format("Could not delete file {0}: {1}", file, ex.Message))
08. End Try
09.Next

You need to add the full path. If you look at the value being added, it's probably just the filename itself.

You could add the full path to the tag property of each item.

Thanks to ToddBeaulieu.

I changed the line:

CheckedListBox1.Items.Add(fileInFolder.FullName)

so it brought up the full path, buy then reverted to my original script to get it to delete the file

If CheckedListBox1.CheckedItems.Count > 0 Then
For Each i As Integer In CheckedListBox1.CheckedIndices
File.Delete(CheckedListBox1.Items(i))
Next i
End If

i gave the full solution... oh well

by: demteamPosted on 2009-10-29 at 06:03:07ID: 25693124

Sorry, meant this code :

If CheckedListBox1.CheckedItems.Count > 0 Then
            For x As Integer = CheckedListBox1.CheckedItems.Count - 1 To 0 Step -1
                File.Delete(CheckedListBox1.CheckedItems(x))
                CheckedListBox1.Items.Remove(CheckedListBox1.CheckedItems(x))
            Next
        End If

by: sedgwickPosted on 2009-10-29 at 06:05:38ID: 25693144

and was the first to do so...

by: ToddBeaulieuPosted on 2009-10-29 at 06:06:16ID: 25693148

If you can figure out how to (I'm not sure how), I think it would be great if you could split the points with sedgwick, because each of us had half of the solution.

Glad you got it working!

ToddBeaulieu: i request a moderator attention for splitting the points.
