Question

How to Paint a Form before it is displayed?

Asked by: mistert006

I am creating a Form that does an animation when it appears.  I need to Paint the text on the Form before it is displayed.

I tried using the Form Paint event to paint the text, but the text is not displayed until the animation stops.  Here is my code so far:

Dim f2 As New Form2
        Dim g As Graphics = f2.CreateGraphics
        Dim myfont As New Font("Microsoft Sans Serif", 9.5)
        Dim sTxt As String = "This is some text"
        Dim rec As New RectangleF
        rec.Height = 50
        rec.Width = 270
        rec.X = 50
        rec.Y = 28
        Dim sf As New StringFormat
        sf.Alignment = StringAlignment.Near
        ' text
        Dim mybrush2 As New SolidBrush(Color.White)
        g.DrawString(sTxt, myfont, mybrush2, rec, sf)
        '
        AnimateWindow(f2.Handle, 300, AnimateWindowFlags.AW_VER_NEGATIVE Or AnimateWindowFlags.AW_SLIDE)

Thanks for any ideas

Can you post your code for the declarations of

 AnimateWindow(f2.Handle, 300, AnimateWindowFlags.AW_VER_NEGATIVE Or AnimateWindowFlags.AW_SLIDE)

in order to be able to run the form

Try using:

This ensures that all messages in the message queue have been completed

I don't think you can.  It seems like the window that is animated is a dynamically created default window everytime and not your window being animated.  In fact, if I didn't followup the AnimateWindow call with .Show() and .Refresh() then the components on my form and the background text did not appear correctly.

The Paint() event is not fired until the animation stops which supports my theory that it is not your window that is being animated.

Interesting...

Instead of the Paint method of the form use this two:

     Protected Overrides Sub WndProc(ByRef m As System.Windows.Forms.Message)
        If m.Msg = WM_PAINT Then
            MyBase.WndProc(m)
            Dim g As Graphics = Me.CreateGraphics

        Dim sf As New StringFormat

        Dim mybrush2 As New SolidBrush(Color.White)

        mybrush2.Dispose()
    End Sub

ALso add this constant:

Private Const WM_PAINT As Integer = &HF

by: Idle_MindPosted on 2004-09-01 at 06:52:51ID: 11952427

That didn't work on my system wguerram...the window that was being animated was still blank.  The controls and drawn background did not appear until after the animation was complete.

Sorry, you are right, i forgot to erase the code of the Paint form.

Let me try something else and i will let you know, if i get something i will let you know.

Add this constant

Private Const WM_PRINTCLIENT As Integer = &H318

Keep you form paint event

and also replace the code i post before with this code

Protected Overrides Sub WndProc(ByRef m As System.Windows.Forms.Message)
        Select Case m.Msg
            Case WM_PRINTCLIENT
                Dim g As Graphics = Graphics.FromHdc(m.WParam)
                DrawText(g)
                g.Dispose()
            Case Else
                MyBase.WndProc(m)
        End Select
    End Sub

    Private Sub DrawText(ByVal g As Graphics)
        Debug.WriteLine("WndProc @ " & DateTime.Now().Millisecond)
        Dim myfont As New Font("Microsoft Sans Serif", 32)
        Dim sTxt As String = "This is some text that wraps on the form that is done form the paint event"
        Dim rec As New RectangleF
        rec.Height = Me.Height
        rec.Width = Me.Width
        rec.X = 5
        rec.Y = 5

        ' text
        Dim mybrush2 As New SolidBrush(Color.White)

        mybrush2.Dispose()
    End Sub

I think wguerram has found a winning combo.

I still had to have a call to DrawText in the Form_Paint() event however and a call to .Show() was necessary after the AnimateWindow() call to make the form components show up properly.
