I have a vb.net application with a default bindingnavigator and a bindingsource and I need to detect whether as user has rights to delete/amend/add records in the underlying SQL database and amend the bindingnavigator buttons accordingly. The underlying datasource is provided via a dataset (as in VB.NET 2005 dataset). Currently I'm trapping failures to add a new record tableadaptor.update but this is really too late as the user has gone through the hassle of filling out the form & hitting save before they are told they're not authorised to add the record.
The add/delete/update rights are set in the underlying SQL database, ideally I would interogate them and disable relevant buttons on the bindingnavigator bar.
Any ideas?

I found the answer. In sql 2005 you can run
SELECT * FROM fn_my_permissions('Drivers
ORDER BY subentity_name, permission_name ;
GO
and the result comes back with a ste of permissions which I can use to set/unset the buttons. This works for the currently logged in user and takes into account all the security roles/permissions etc to come up with the absolute rights of the user.
If you need to know the same for another user add the following line to the begining of the above snippet
EXECUTE AS login = 'user';

Just create a new query:
SELECT b.name AS USERName, c.name AS RoleName
FROM sysmembers AS a INNER JOIN
sysusers AS b ON a.memberuid = b.uid INNER JOIN
sysusers AS c ON a.groupuid = c.uid
WHERE (c.name = 'db_datawriter') AND (b.name = @UserName)
If rows count >0 then make your buttons enabled, if count =0 - disabled
