Question

Permanently change constant's value in real time running VB NET.

Asked by: mshabalin

I wonder if there is a way to permanently change a constant in a real time.
For example:  My software should connect to test.mdb file that resides at c:\software\test\
and i use a connection string that uses path variable which is
Dim  path as String = "c:\software\test\"
I want to be able to run my software, and while it's running go let's say to it's settings tab and change the location for test.mdb to d:\another\test\., ie path = "d:\another\test\".
And the next time i run my software it will look for a test.mdb in a new location. I dont want to use any configuration files such as .ini or others, just need one fexecutable file.
Is it possible at all? P.S. VB.NET  THANK YOU !

if you are using .net 2005 you can use the settings.settings file for items like this.

what version you using.

You could also use the .config file and just select it to embed it to the project

It's not clear what your objection to the obvious solution of an external file is, but are we allowed to use the registry?
If so, there are the easy-to use SaveSetting and GetSetting calls, which might suit you

You can create a file named "app.config"

Something like below

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
<configuration>
  <appSettings>
    <add key="MyKey" value="MyValue" />
  </appSettings>
</configuration>

Then to retrieve it, do something like below
But before that, make sure you add "System.Configuration" as your reference.

Imports System.Configuration
''''''''
''''''''
            Dim myKey As String = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings("LogFileDir")

if you look on the left in the solution explorer section double click My project you will see a tab called settings.
 Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
        Dim value As String

        value = My.MySettings.Default.test

    End Sub

    Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
        My.MySettings.Default.test = "tim"
        My.MySettings.Default.Save()

    End Sub

really simple and is great I use it for connectionstrings, color/font settings, etc.

Iif you want to see how the connectionstrings work just add a dataset to the project and then a datatable and you will see that is were the connectionstrings get stored.

I hope this helps.

Instead of Dim  path as String = "c:\software\test\" to identify the path try using a shared variable

Public Class Form1

    Public Shared path As String = "c:\software\test"

End Class

if you want to access this from anywhere like Form1.path
