How can visual basic application connect to SQL server 2005 database over the internet?

Hi Experts,
I'm developing a visual basic application that uses a SQL server as it's database. I know that the vb application can connect to the SQL server over (LAN)local area network, is there a way for the app to connect to the SQL server over WAN(internet)
