The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Treeview To Display Dates Then Details
I am brand new to the treeview object but I will have to have it in this particular project.

I have a table that has 2 columns
display_date
display_message

I need the treeview to build a node for each distinct "display_date" and format "MM/DD/YYYY" ....under the "display_date" the child nodes would be "display_message" data that is associated to each date.

I hope this is as simple as it sounds..

Thanks in advance.

ASP.NET or WinForms?

05.09.2008 at 06:21AM PDT, ID: 21532467
WinForms....sorry

Is this hierarchical data, or just a simple list?  Is a TreeView the appropriate control in this case?  Would a ListView work also?

05.09.2008 at 06:36AM PDT, ID: 21532597

05.09.2008 at 06:37AM PDT, ID: 21532605
This would be hierarchical
Example ....

 - Dates
    - 05/09/2008
           - Hello This is a test
           - This is a Test2
   - 05/10/2008
           - Still Testing
           - Test3
   + 05/11/2008

emoreau,

I tried this but I think that it is using two tables...  I am new to the treview thing.

05.09.2008 at 06:44AM PDT, ID: 21532681

Rank: Sage

you can do it with a single table.

replace daProducts with "select distinct display_date from YourTable"
while the second dataadapter will be a "select * from YourVerySameTable"

05.09.2008 at 07:04AM PDT, ID: 21532898
emoreau,

I keep getting an error of "Parent columns and child columns don't have type-matching columns." on the following ...

Dim relPC As DataRelation = ds.Relations.Add("relProductsCategories", _
                                      ds.Tables("message").Columns("display_date"), _
                                      ds.Tables("message").Columns("display_message"))

05.09.2008 at 07:08AM PDT, ID: 21532944

Rank: Sage

the relation has to be the field that links both table together. In your case it should be:

Dim relPC As DataRelation = ds.Relations.Add("relProductsCategories", _
                                      ds.Tables("message").Columns("display_date"), _
                                      ds.Tables("message").Columns("display_date"))

05.09.2008 at 07:12AM PDT, ID: 21532996
I tried and it gives me an error of
"parentkey and childkey are identical"

05.09.2008 at 07:23AM PDT, ID: 21533108

Rank: Sage

wait, you are referencing twice the same datatable (ds.Tables("message"))

can you show more of your code (creation of dataadapter, filling the dataset, creating the relation, ...)

05.09.2008 at 07:31AM PDT, ID: 21533183
here is what I have so far -----

       Dim cn As New SqlClient.SqlConnection _
                      ("Server=My_Server;Database=My_DataBase;Trusted_Connection=yes")

        Dim daProducts As New SqlClient.SqlDataAdapter("SELECT distinct display_date from message", cn)
        Dim daCategories As New SqlClient.SqlDataAdapter("SELECT display_message from message", cn)

        Dim ds As New DataSet
        daProducts.Fill(ds, "message")
        daCategories.Fill(ds, "message")

        Dim relPC As DataRelation = ds.Relations.Add("relProductsCategories", _
                                      ds.Tables("message").Columns("display_date"), _
                                      ds.Tables("message").Columns("display_date"))
        With TreeView1

            .BeginUpdate()

            .Nodes.Clear()

            For Each drCat As DataRow In ds.Tables("Categories").Rows

                Dim nodParent As TreeNode
                nodParent = TreeView1.Nodes.Add(drCat.Item("CategoryName").ToString)

                For Each drProduct As DataRow In drCat.GetChildRows(relPC)

                    Dim nodChild As TreeNode
                    nodChild = nodParent.Nodes.Add(drProduct.Item("ProductName").ToString)
                    If nodChild.Text.ToUpper.IndexOf("Y") >= 0 Then
                        nodChild.BackColor = Color.Gray
                    End If
                Next drProduct
            Next drCat

            .ExpandAll()

            .EndUpdate()

            .Nodes(0).EnsureVisible()
        End With

You need to change all table names and fields names!

change your code for:

     Dim cn As New SqlClient.SqlConnection _
                      ("Server=My_Server;Database=My_DataBase;Trusted_Connection=yes")

        Dim daProducts As New SqlClient.SqlDataAdapter("SELECT distinct display_date from message", cn)
        Dim daCategories As New SqlClient.SqlDataAdapter("SELECT display_date , display_message from message", cn)

        Dim ds As New DataSet
        daProducts.Fill(ds, "dates")
        daCategories.Fill(ds, "message")

        Dim relPC As DataRelation = ds.Relations.Add("relProductsCategories", _
                                      ds.Tables("dates").Columns("display_date"), _
                                      ds.Tables("message").Columns("display_date"))
        With TreeView1

            .BeginUpdate()

            .Nodes.Clear()

            For Each drCat As DataRow In ds.Tables("dates").Rows

                Dim nodParent As TreeNode
                nodParent = TreeView1.Nodes.Add(drCat.Item("display_date").ToString)

                For Each drProduct As DataRow In drCat.GetChildRows(relPC)

                    Dim nodChild As TreeNode
                    nodChild = nodParent.Nodes.Add(drProduct.Item("display_message").ToString)
                Next drProduct
            Next drCat

            .ExpandAll()

            .EndUpdate()

            .Nodes(0).EnsureVisible()
        End With
Accepted Solution

emoreau,

ok I see where I went wrong...  It is all starting to make perfect sense.  I now think that I am getting the idea of the treeview object..

This is working perfect!
thanks emoreau!
