The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

fileInfo object Delete exception

Tags: VB.NET 2005
Hello experts;

I am using the DirectoryInfo and FileInfo classes to cycle through a specific directory and process a series of files.  The code I am using works great, until I need to delete the files.  At this point, my application thows an exception:

"the process cannot access the file, it is being used by another process"

If you have any suggestions on how I might fix this issue, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time

Just as a thought, you might call GC.Collect and WaitForPendingFinalizers... Remember garbage disposal doesn't always occur when you call Dispose.

tfpFile.Close()
GC.Collect()
GC.WaitForPendingFinalizers()
tfpFile.Dispose()
f.Delete()

Paul,

Thanks for your suggestion, unfortunately that did not resolve my issue.

Any other ideas?

I think I messed up when copy/pasting the code...  Call GC.Collect *after* Dispose... Sorry.

Paul,

Switch up the statement order and it still didnt fix the problem.

followup to Paul --

Paul, using your code, it seems like it will delete all files *except* the first file.  For the first file, it still throws the exception.  If I "'walk through" the error on the first file, the code will properly process the remaining files.

Any ideas on that?

Check if the file can be deleted in explorer after your program is closed. May just be that the file has an open handle that never got closed during debugging.

I think it may be more a matter of the OPERATING SYSTEM itself is not done "releasing" the file.  It takes physical time for the OS to fully close the file and release all the locks.

Try waiting a second or two before attempting to delete the file.

...or you could even write a looping mechanism that automatically waits a couple seconds between tries:

    Private Function DeleteFile(ByVal f As System.IO.FileInfo, Optional ByVal DelayInSeconds As Integer = 1, Optional ByVal MaxTries As Integer = 10) As Boolean
        For i As Integer = 1 To MaxTries
            Try
                f.Delete()
                Return True
            Catch ex As Exception
                System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(TimeSpan.FromSeconds(DelayInSeconds).TotalMilliseconds)
            End Try
        Next
        Return False
    End Function

A possible incorporation of the code above:

        For Each f As FileInfo In oFiles

            ' ... parsing code ...

            If Not DeleteFile(f) Then
                MessageBox.Show(f.Name, "File Deletion Failed")
            End If
        Next
