The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

You can use SubString instead

05.15.2008 at 09:04AM PDT, ID: 21575112
It has to be equivalent to right. We want the same function as right. Substring will affect the performance.

How will it affect performance?!

Anyhoo, you just need to fully qualify the Right() function so it doesn't clash with the Right() property of the Form (which tells its location):
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.visualbasic.strings.right(VS.85).aspx

    Label1.Text = Microsoft.VisualBasic.Right(someString, 2)

ahnchennai,
you don't have problems with performance but you can use like Idle proposed. You can also import in the beginning of the form.
Imports Microsoft.VisualBasic

Idle_Mind,
I have read somewhere that the Microsoft.VisualBasic namespaces exists for compatibility with previous versions. Like RightB that is no longer supported. Do you know anything? I like that functions :-(

MOST of the functions in the Microsoft.VisualBasic namespace are for backwards compatibility.

There is some new, cool stuff in there though, like the TextFieldParser():
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.visualbasic.fileio.textfieldparser.aspx?s=6

I have no idea why they stuck it in that namespace!...

Take a  look at the things listed:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.visualbasic.aspx

...most of it is used when you upgrade a VB6 project.

Thanks the information and for the links!

When I started with .NET I found some nice things, like Lenght() that replaces Len(), but didn't found nothing for Right() and Left() functions. SubString solves it but it's not a "nice" solution.

I haven't tested on this one but I was surprised to find that at least some of the "old" VisualBasic stuff that is just included for backward compatibility is actually faster than its VB.NET replacements.  See the last couple of lines in this thread

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Programming/Languages/.NET/Visual_Basic.NET/Q_21489283.html

The discovery was quite by chance.  I did, at the time dig a bit further into it, and found it was because TrimStart and TrimEnd do more work "behind the scenes" than LTrim and RTrim do.  It's nearly three years ago now, and I can't remember all the details, but I think they catch more potential "white space" characters.

But it has made me a bit wary of assuming that VB.NET functions will perform "better" (or even at least as well as) their VisualBasic predecessors.

Great tip Roger!

I didn't realize that Regex where so slow comparing with the other methods. I thought that Regex was a very quick method but hard to handle.

My main concert using "old" functions is the compatibility of them in future releases. But it seams that they are here to stay!

Thanks

Roger that...I'll have to test some of them out.  =)

I do have to admit that Right() is a heck of alot more readable than SubString() when you just want the last XXX characters.

I've now had a chance to test.  Not, I stress, at laboratory levels.  So you can check if I was comparing like with like, the test frameworks for the two methods were the same but the operative lines were

            result1 = Microsoft.VisualBasic.Right(teststring, extent)

and

            result2 = teststring.Substring(teststring.Length - extent)

I don't think there's really anything in it either way.  If there is, it looks to be in favour of Right, but it is so small as to be meaningless: I had to do 10000000 (Ten million) iterations before anything was discernable at all.  And then the results, discarding the first, were

Using Right - 1672 milliseconds
Using Substring - 1719 milliseconds
Using Right - 1609 milliseconds
Using Substring - 1656 milliseconds
Using Right - 1656 milliseconds
Using Substring - 1625 milliseconds
Using Right - 1609 milliseconds
Using Substring - 1656 milliseconds
Using Right - 1594 milliseconds
Using Substring - 1641 milliseconds

But, for my money, Right would win out on two scores.  First, it is (even with including the namespace) easier to code and read.  Secondly, it won't error (whereas Substring will) if it is asked for a greater number of rightmost characters than are in the total string.  That problem can be overcome in code with SubString but (a) it makes for more code and (b), although I didn't test the point, would I think slow it down a bit.

Not really quite on topic.  But I thought it worth sharing ;-)
