remove trailing comma from list

HI

I must be doing something really stupid wrong as my code is not working so I hoped a fresh pair of eyes might see my mistake.

I need to remove the last character from a string. It is basically a trailing comma in a comma separated list. Here is my code but the comma remains!

      'remove trailing comma from list
                s = s.Remove(s.Length - 1, 1)

Debug.WriteLine(s.Replace("'", ""))

s = s.Substring(0, s.Length - 1)

Also, you might want to think about using a StringBuilder, because of the immutable nature of strings in the CLR, but that choice is up to you.

       Dim cs as String = "abc1,"
        cs = cs.Remove(cs.Length - 1,1)

worked for me without any errors

Your own code should work.  That it doesn't makes me guess that the comma is not actually at the end of the source string.  There's probably some white space after it.  So try

     s = s.TrimEnd

before

     s = s.Remove(s.Length - 1, 1)

Or you could pass both space AND comma to TrimEnd:

        Dim s As String = "a,b,c, "
        Debug.Print(s)
        s = s.TrimEnd(" ,".ToCharArray)
        Debug.Print(s)

(so many variations...so little time...)

Ah, yes.  But what if the "white space" is not just " "?  Unlikely, in practice, I agree.  But that was why I left it at .TrimEnd with no arguments first, as that catches a whole (indeed the whole?) range of possible white space characters.  

I think we've had this discussion before ... ;-)
