Negative Single Value

I have a variable that is declared inside a module

"        Public BandErs As Single        "

I also have a Masked Text Box ("mTextBoxEmployersBand") with "00.00" set to its mask property

I assign a number to the Masked Text box using the following ststement

"        Form2.mTextBoxEmployersBand.Text = "-0150"           "

I also assign the value to the variable using the following ststement

"      BandErs = Form2.mTextBoxEmployersBand.Text       "

however when I come to use the figure in a calculation is doesnt take into account the negative in the number so my answer comes out posotive.

What am I doing wrong?

In the calculation are you using Convert.ToSingle(mTextboxEmployersBand.Text) this is a string value and needs to be converted.

You should get an implicit cast, though explicitly casting is generally a good idea.

Is the other operand negative too? (Negative * Negative = Positive)

If not, then have you tested the value BandErs before using it?

Like:

BandErs = Form2.mTextBoxEmployersBand.Text  
MsgBox(BandErs)

Hello, ict-torquilclark,

If the PromptChar property of your MaskedTextBox were set to a hyphen (minus sign), that would do it.

(Also, you should heed the others' advice about explicit conversions.  I recomment that you always use "Option Strict On".)

Or another possibility would be that your Mask includes a hyphen (minus sign) and the TextMaskFormat property is set to not include literals (i.e. ExcludePromptAndLiterals or IncludePrompt).

Sorry for not getting back to you yesterday.

I have checked the properties on the masked text box and the Prompt character is set to _ (underscore) not -(minus/hyphen).

The mask is set to 00.00 and the TextMaskFormat is set to include literals.

The only thing I can see that may possibly tie in is that SkipLiterals is set to true?

Could this have anything to do with it?

I have tried setting the text property of the masked text box to a label and it is coming up as a posotive number?

I have solved this problem but it seems to be more of a work around that a fix.

I have changed the mask from 00.00 to #00.00. The problem seemed to be that 0 would only accept numeric values (I know this is what it is designed to do but it wouldnt acept the "-" for the negative number). I have also changed the Prompt Character from _(underscore) to 0(zero).

The issue now is that the first character (the #) will never be a number it will only ever signify a - (on the rare occasion that this is a negative number. This means that users will have to type "022.55" when they want to input 22.55%

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Close as I can get ya is:

mask of "###.00
promt char " " <- space

This will allow the "-" to be in any position prior to the "." and this will allow it to do math equations.
They will have to use the space bar to get where they want to start the number - this should not be a big deal.
