The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Vista IO.File Error

Hi,
I have a small windows app I am working on, works fine on xp, but not on vista for some reason.

My Code looks like this:

Friend ReadOnly Property myFile() As String
        Get
            Dim s As String = Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.ApplicationData) & "\myApp\myfile.txt"
            Return s
        End Get
    End Property

I check to see if it's there and if not create it...

Function CheckFile() As string
        If IO.File.Exists(myFile) = False Then
            IO.File.WriteAllText(myFile, myText)
else
'Read The file return the value
end if
End Sub

Works on XP, on vista however I am getting an error (Could not find part of the path, then the path from the property above).

What do I have to do to fix this?

Thanks

You could try debugging for that Application Data folder.
Try to msgbox(Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.ApplicationData)) or some other kind of output, in order to verify if you get any valid folder from that object.

I do not have vista, another user has vista and gets this error, the error is pretty clear it says

Could not find part of the path c:\users\username\appdata\roaming\myApp\myfile.txt

does not error on xp.

ApplicationData Folder on XP is c:\docs and settings\user\application data\

but I do not see how that matters because I am using the environment object to get back a valid path...

So, does "..\myApp\myfile.txt" folder and file exist on the Vista machine?
Is this a client/server app or does it work independently on each machine?

05.11.2008 at 03:50PM PDT, ID: 21543815
No it does not exist, that is why I am checking 1st...

Function CheckFile() As string
If IO.File.Exists(myFile) = False Then -  - Check if file exiists
IO.File.WriteAllText(myFile, myText) - NO THEN CCREATE IT

HERE IS WHERE IT IS ERRORING

else
'Read The file return the value
end if
End function

You'll need to create the directory before writing the file....
