The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Valid date using C#

Tags: date
i have a string variable in which i get values from 3 different  date  variable and make it look like a date

eg      validdate = requestdate1.month + "/" + requestdate2.day + "/" + requestdate3.year

i want to compare the validdate and see whether it is actually a valid date.

so lets say if get a validdate = "2/30/2007" or "4/31/2007"

i would like to convert those dates into 2/28/2007 or 4/30/2007.

so basically i want to convert any invalid date into last day of that given month.

Use TryParse() method to validate a date and if it's invalid reduce day by one and try parse again util you get a valid one. Implement using recursive call.

   private DateTime GetValidDate(int day, int month, int year)
   {
      DateTime date;
      string dateText = month + "/" + day + "/" + year;
      bool isValid = DateTime.TryParse(dateText, DateTimeFormatInfo.InvariantInfo,
         DateTimeStyles.None, out    date);
      if(isValid)
      {
         return date;
      }
      else
      {
          GetValidDate(day--, month, year);
      }
   }

I am getting couple errors  1 on DateTimeFormatInfo
( The type or namespace name 'DateTimeFormatInfo' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)

2 on DateTimeStyles
(The type or namespace name 'DateTimeStyles' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)

how do i fix that?

using System.Globalization;

throws me an error over here now
bool isValid = DateTime.Parse(dateText, DateTimeFormatInfo.InvariantInfo, DateTimeStyles.None);

Cannot implicitly convert type 'System.DateTime' to 'bool'

And also i took out the 4 arguement as it said its not allowed

02.20.2007 at 08:19AM PST, ID: 18571634
Its bool isValid = DateTime.TryParse(dateText, DateTimeFormatInfo.InvariantInfo,
         DateTimeStyles.None, out    date);

Please refer my solution.

then it gives me this error
'System.DateTime' does not contain a definition for 'TryParse'

I think you are using VS 2003, my code was written in VS2005. So, please do the necessary changes in the method to work with VS2003.

You could use a try...catch block to test for an error, although this is generally considered bad practice. To do this, modify jijeesh's suggestion to be:

   private DateTime GetValidDate(int day, int month, int year)
   {
      DateTime date;
      try
      {
            date = new DateTime(year, month, day);
      }
      catch(ArgumentOutOfRangeException e)
      {
            date = GetValidDate(--day,month,year);
      }
      return date;
   }

Most of that code is, of course, jijeesh's.
If you don't like the idea of a try..catch block, you could write a method that specifically checks the day based on the month (so you'd have a function that returned the number of days in a certain month, for example). That would require a fair bit more coding.

yes my code is in VS2003. what is equivalent to tryparse in 2003. i tried using .Parse and .ParseExact and they both are giving me error  "Cannot implicitly convert type 'System.DateTime' to 'bool'
