How do I get the DataTable row index underlying a DataView?

I am building an editable GridView for an ASP.NET 2.0 web form, and would like users to be able to add, edit, and delete as many rows as they like before saving the contents of the grid to a database. The way I am doing this is with an editable GridView and a DataTable as its source (which is being written to and read from the viewstate).

However, as users add, edit, and delete rows I would like the GridView to remain sorted by date. For instance, if the user adds a new row with an earlier date than all the other records, it should pop to the top of the datagrid. It should not simply append new records, it should re-sort.

I implemented a DataView to accomplish this, which is working as expected for new rows and deletions, but I can't figure out a way to implement edits. The reason is, when the GridView fires the RowUpdating event, the GridViewUpdateEventArgs does not contain an index to find the row in the underlying datatable that was just edited. It contains e.RowIndex, but that is the index in the GridView. I could also try to get it from GridView.Rows[e.RowIndex].DataItemIndex, but since the GridView is bound to a DataView instead of the DataTable itself, that is not quite good enough.

What I need is the hypothetical:
DataView.Rows[GridView.Rows[e.RowIndex].DataItemIndex].UnderlyingTableIndex

But of course that doesn't exist. Any way to work around this or solve my problem? Thanks for your help.
