gridview row colors

using a grideview format to display databound information...this is working fine etc.

what I am wanting to know is how do I change a gridview row dynamically -- I understand about the generic templated settings etc.

for example, the effect I need is to color many different rows depending on row data retrieved -- have a list of data sensitive sorted via date.

woudl like to display older, more urgent items in those lists with varying escalated color scheme...red backgrond row meaning very urgent, plan -- standard...but at the moment I can only see the templated color scheme, row, and alternative row color settings...not seeing how I can use unlimited comnbinations of rows colors in real-time.
