The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

drop down list selected value

Tags: c#, asp.net 2.x, visual studio 2008 pro, sql 2005 server, iis 6
how do I get the drop down list selected value to register the first time a page / drop list is loaded ...

as when you select an item within the dropdown menu post's back and updates its value -- but upon load there is nothing yet (as not yet selected).

how do I get this selected value to take the first value that is loaded in the drop down as its value (as I need a datagrid to pick this value -- at the moment nothing happens unless I select an item and page refreshes.

BillyDvD:  ok, have tested, the list index appears to start from '0'.

but...this is not triggering my datagrid to update ... i.e. as is you have selected an item from the dropdown list... normally you select, page refreshes and other things like datagrid's update themselves.

tmpLeadSourceProvider receives a value '0' -- but DropDownList_LeadSourceProviders_ID.SelectedIndex  sets itself to value  '-1'  when using the attached scripting.
1:
2:
int tmpLeadSourceProvider = (int)rdr[9];
                            DropDownList_LeadSourceProviders_ID.SelectedIndex = tmpLeadSourceProvider;

try setting it in this event:

protected override void OnInit( EventArgs e )
        {
// Do your initialization here
            base.OnInit( e );
        }

or maybe in the prerender event.

I am just learning web myself so.. I am testing things as well.

trying another drop-down to compare results:  DropDownList1.SelectedValue = [string value] .... I am constantly getting "" value (empty string).

I have tried == using strings and integers (converted to strings) as a value -- but DropDownList1.SelectedValue does not change from  ""

Why could this be so?

try to use selectedindex...   or use a statment like...

this.DropDownList1.SelectedItem = this.DropDownList1.Items.FindByText( "Three" );

All of the codes above are correct in every area, but the true way to have those run correctly is by placing the code in the PreRender Event of the control  this will in fact load all of the data, but just before the control is rendered it will load that value into the selected place that you like

on the PreRender event you will type something like this....(I'm using states as an example)
1:
2:
3:
4:
5:
6:
7:
8:
    protected void ddStates_PreRender(object sender, EventArgs e)
    {
        //ListItem state = new ListItem("Florida", "Florida");
        //this.ddStates.SelectedItem.Text = state.Text;
        //You can play with this a little and get the best result
        //but the key is to put on the prerender event
        this.ddStates.SelectedValue = "Florida";
    }
