If I remove the SmoothPanelUpdate it works without changing the code.

Hi there. In your script you are using the client ID of 'btnToPrint'. Run your page and check the ID that ASP.NET is rendering. If your button is nested in other containers, ASP.NET will rename it. ASP.NET offers the ClientID property to get the ID that is rendered in the page. Let me know what you find.
