XmlSerializer to string object

I have the following method which serialize the xmlData object and write the XML result to file.
I need to change this method to get the XML result as a string (not to file)  in order to store it in Access DB.
How can I do this?

   public static void SetGamePropertiesXMLFile(WindowsFormsApplication1.xmlData gameProp, string filePath)
        {
            try
            {
                using (Stream stream = new FileStream(filePath, FileMode.Create))
                {
                    using (XmlWriter writer = new XmlTextWriter(stream, Encoding.UTF8))
                    {
                        XmlSerializer serializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(WindowsFormsApplication1.xmlData));
                        serializer.Serialize(writer, gameProp);
                    }
                    
                }
 
            }
            catch (Exception ex)
            {
                throw ex;
            }

So instead of using a FileStream, why not use a MemoryStream? Then you can grab the string from the bytes created in MS:

        using (MemoryStream stream = new MemoryStream())
        {
            using (XmlWriter writer = new XmlTextWriter(stream, Encoding.UTF8))
            {
                XmlSerializer serializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(WindowsFormsApplication1.xmlData));
                serializer.Serialize(writer, gameProp); 
                // sData will hold the string-representation of the serialization
                string sData = Encoding.ASCII.GetString(stream.ToArray());
            }
        }
    }
    catch (Exception ex)
    {
        throw ex;
    }
}

Thank you.
I have to change the encoding from ASCII to UTF8 (as the XmlWriter) in order to get it work.
The first line of the XML that I get is  with question marks:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
Is this an error?

I wasn't thinking when I did the encoding part. Encoding.Utf8 should be what you need since you encoded it that way in your TextWriter.
