When dealing with older hardware it sometimes is just easier to bypass it completely. Here's an example of a unit that can sit on the phone lines ahead of your PBX and send you callerID info to a PC.

You talk to the unit via plain RS-232 so its pretty easy to intefrace with. They provide examples etc for a number of languages.

KX-TA - Is a limeted system, RS323 and hyper terminal will give you the out bound call info. To get Caller ID you need an aditional card this system is analogue only. You'll need the manuals to get com port settings.

KX-TD is an out of date system - I don't belive supports analouge Caller Id on analogue lines. So it would have to be an ISDN installation. Again use the RS232 port to retrieve the data.
The above systems do not support 3rd Party TAPI (Telephone Application Programme Interface) a better solution would be to use the TAPI interface which is free with the KXTDA (Latest and greatest from Panasonic) - and the software / middle ware is downloadable foc. ( or at least was ) the connection is via a cross over cable from a RJ45 on the processor. The TAPI interface would then give you much more information including realtime extension status.
